Data Centre Infrastructure

Modac

Modac is a South African data centre infrastructure specialist, established in 1985 and operating from Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, providing data centre and server room design and construction, UPS and battery backup, precision cooling, racks and cabinets, raised access flooring, fire detection and suppression, and environmental monitoring. Axil is Modac's own product range of UPS systems, inverters, batteries, micro data centres, HVAC, raised access flooring and solar. Scout Outsource specifies, supplies and supports it.

This is the layer nobody thinks about until it fails. Power, cooling, containment and fire suppression are what decide whether an estate stays up through a grid event or a hot afternoon, and in South Africa that is not a theoretical concern. Modac has built this layer here since 1985, and manufactures the Axil range it installs, which means the UPS, the micro data centre cabinet, the raised floor and the monitoring come from one supplier with one support path rather than four. Scout specifies it alongside the rest of your estate, so the hosting, the hardware and the room they sit in are quoted and supported together.

What Modac does

Axil FT3300 three-phase modular UPS
A modular, expandable UPS from 50kW to 600kW in 100, 120, 180 and 200kW chassis, built for server rooms, call centres and data centres. Pluggable front-access power modules shorten repair time, up to four units run in parallel on a common battery, and dual mains inputs, a built-in maintenance bypass, generator compatibility and 98.5 percent ECO mode efficiency come as standard.
Axil RTS single-phase online UPS
A 6kVA to 10kVA online high-frequency UPS, rack mounted or standalone, with three-level topology and active power factor correction above 0.99, zero transfer time and a wide 110 to 300 VAC input range for sites where the supply itself is the problem.
Axil Micro Data Center
A pre-assembled and pre-wired 42U cabinet that fits through a standard doorway and holds the UPS, batteries, 12,000 or 15,000 BTU rack-mount air conditioning, distribution board and bypass, PDU, environmental monitoring, biometric access control and double-knock aerosol or FM200 fire suppression, in a true hot and cold aisle configuration. Single through to penta rack configurations, 1000kg carrying capacity, remote cooling management by GSM.
Axil 1000 raised access flooring
Epoxy-coated 600 by 600 by 35mm steel and cement panels rated to a 1700 kg per square metre floor load limit, on height-adjustable steel pedestals and bolt-on stringers from 150mm to 600mm finished floor height, with airflow grilles and brush grommets that seal cable penetrations so cold air goes where it is meant to.
AxilView environmental monitoring
Real-time visibility of power, temperature, humidity, flood, smoke, UPS and generator state and after-hours access across every site, with alerting by GSM and email, so a cooling failure at a branch is a notification rather than a Monday morning discovery.
Design, construction and maintenance
Data centres, server rooms, edge sites and patch rooms designed and built to requirement, with precision HVAC, containment, racks and cabinets, fire detection and suppression, and the service plan that keeps warranties and certification valid, extendable to five years.

Who Modac is for

Organisations building or refurbishing a server room or data centre, branch and edge sites that need data centre resilience without a dedicated room, businesses whose UPS or cooling is reaching end of life, and any site where load shedding and grid instability make backup power a continuity problem rather than a convenience.

Common questions

What is Axil?

Axil is Modac's own product range of data centre infrastructure: three-phase and single-phase UPS systems, inverters, batteries, micro data centres, HVAC, raised access flooring and solar. Scout Outsource supplies and supports the range in South Africa.

What is a micro data centre?

A micro data centre is a self-contained cabinet holding racks, UPS and batteries, air conditioning, power distribution, monitoring, access control and fire suppression in one enclosure. The Axil Micro DC is pre-assembled, fits through a standard doorway and suits branch offices and edge sites that need data centre resilience without building a room.

What size UPS do we need?

It depends on the load you are protecting and how long you need to ride through an outage. The Axil RTS range covers single-phase loads from 6kVA to 10kVA for comms rooms and small server rooms, and the modular Axil FT3300 scales from 50kW to 600kW for data centres and call centres. Scout sizes it against your actual measured load, not the nameplate.

How often should UPS batteries be replaced?

Typically every three to five years, depending on chemistry and how hot the room runs, though monitoring gives you the real answer rather than the average. Lithium lasts considerably longer than VRLA and tolerates heat far better, which matters in South African conditions.

Can a UPS run with a generator?

Yes. The Axil FT3300 is generator compatible and includes a power walk-in function and frequency converter mode, which is what stops the UPS fighting an unstable generator supply during the transfer.

Why does a server room need raised flooring?

A raised floor carries power and data under the equipment rather than overhead, and it is how cold air is delivered to the front of the racks through airflow grilles. Without the sealed grommets and containment, cooled air leaks into the room and the cooling plant works harder for less effect.

Do you cover all of South Africa?

Yes. Modac operates nationally from Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, and Scout coordinates data centre infrastructure alongside the rest of your estate wherever you are based.
